I am Quetzal
A story of a little boy who escapes his harsh reality by pretending to be a little green bird
In the fashion of a Native American folk tale, “I am Quetzal” vividly addresses the arduous journey of Central American immigrants. The story gives insight into the decisions made by many immigrants to leave their place of birth, pursue their dreams in the United States and eventually assimilate into the American culture.
We see the immigrant struggle through the eyes and life of Benjamin, a little boy who escapes his reality by pretending to be a little green bird, named Quetzal. Benni’s imagination allows him to escape from the hunger pains and the many struggles he and his family face as they decide to leave behind everything they know and love.

This book shares a great tale of overcoming challenges in an imaginative way. Simply beautiful!
Sometimes as adults we forget the impact change is on a child. Loved how Benjamin reminds us the innocence of a child. How a child will use their imagination to help cope and over come fears in the world. Beautifully written story. I definitely recommend reading to your little ones
